Motorscore reviewers like the electric wunderkind the Fortwo, also called SmartCar or Smart Coupé, from Smart GmbH. As a relatively young and hip entrée to the rear-engined two-seater sector, it’s built as well as it looks. And it’s, well, smart in the way you’ll be able to park it on a hill in San Francisco or a cliff overlooking the Grand Canyon with equal ease.
In fun colors and stripes, Smart’s freshman vehicle is fast enough to inspire one reviewer to enthuse that it takes off “like a stabbed rat.” It also sports brilliant fuel economy at 34 mpg highway and 38 highway, drives fluidly around town, impresses reviewers with the “feel good factor” and bowls ‘em over on performance.
If this wee, $16,000 eco-friendly pebble of a car has a downside it may be the size of its car door. It’s so big that you’ll need plenty of space to open it, even if once inside you’re tucked into a hamster’s crawl space. And according the U.S. News Rankings and Reviews, the powertrain is problematic, too: when it comes to gobbling up premium gas, or trying to pass on the highway. These are small problems, though, for the romantics and eco-friendly moralists who hate you because you’re driving a GHG-chugging SUV.
